• Safety valves are installed in a producing well to permit flow during normal conditions but provide a complete well shutdown in case of a well control incident. One of the most common pieces of oilfield equipment, surface safety valves must be properly tested and maintained to ensure that personnel are kept safe and that damage to equipment and the environment is avoided. This product line has a long history of reliability, but sometimes reliability is only one half of the story.

    In the December issue of Oilfield Technology, Roel Hooiveld, our sales and service manager for surface safety in continental Europe, explores the journey of our surface safety product line, details operating principles, and discusses maintenance best practices. In addition, he offers his thoughts on how to better anticipate problems with surface safety equipment, acknowledging that to continue moving forward, we must overcome the perception that a safety device cannot also be a potential hazard.
